Buffalo Tongue

I had a few deliveries in the Fort Jones area today and got to go past the buffalo family. Didn't get pictures of the mom or the calf but the dad wasn't happy with his picture and stuck his tongue out at me.

Freshly Born Calf

I was making some deliveries near Gazelle today and spotted this field of longhorn cattle and saw one "momma" licking her baby. Looks like it was recently born. (click picture for larger image)

Old Bridges

This is the old (1931) Pioneer Bridge on Highway 263 which crosses the Shasta River north of Yreka. It is quite a ways down to the river.

Top of the Mountain

This mountain top tower and building set right alongside I-5 north just north of Mountain Gate, CA. at about 2000 feet. See terrain map here. You can see their "Christmas Tree" lights setup in the third photo next to the tower. This can also be seen coming south on I-5 before crossing the Pit River Bridge.

Aaah, the Fresh Smell of Spring!

There is nothing quite like being behind a cattle truck on a nice warm day. Even more fun passing them on a curve. Those quarter mile brown marks on the freeway curves are not Cal Trans markings. The ranchers are busy moving their cattle to the summer pastures.

Road Work

Road work ahead, prepare to stop, allow for delays, follow me.
Yup, springtime is here and CalTrans is out and about on all the roads. This definitely adds time to your day. Better bring a magazine.

Klamath River Gold

Lots of people searching for gold again as the prices continue to climb. One of the many dredges being used on claims along the Klamath River is shown in the picture.

Carriers of the Cross

I met Mr. Whalen today in Happy Camp.
He has walked more than 5000 miles carrying the cross.

Yreka's Dragon

This dragon sits alongside I-5 northbound just north of Yreka. Quite an interesting piece of work. Mount Shasta is usually visible directly behind the dragon but there were a few too many clouds today. (click picture for a larger image)

Slow Down, Wet Roads

Oops! Too late. I hope the driver was ok.
This happened Sunday night but was still off the road today.

Alpacas and their Watchdogs

I had a few deliveries to the Fort Jones and Etna area on Friday and saw these nice alpacas. They have the big watchdogs (Pyrenees) that protect them. They are used for sheep, llamas and alpacas. They are raised from puppies with the animals and not with humans. They guard their herd with their lives. In the Pyrenees mountains they will take on bears.
